CBC Inclement Weather & Travel Information

College Closure or Delay – It’s that time of year again where any given morning we could wake up to winter weather conditions. Although it’s rare, if you suspect that CBC may be closed, please check one of these resources:

CBC telephone 547-0511. If the campus is closed or delayed, the message will state that CBC is closed or delayed. If there is no message about a closure or delay, the college is open as usual.

Information will only be posted or announced if CBC should close. Employees are expected to use reasonable judgment regarding traveling to work in inclement weather/adverse road conditions. Winter College Travel
Programs and departments are especially encouraged to be aware of winter road conditions and evaluate the need for large group travel, especially with students (i.e. class field trips, ASB club activities, etc). Unless absolutely necessary, it is recommended that large group travel with students be rescheduled to take place during the late spring, summer and early fall months, rather than during winter weather months

Walk, Don’t Run
Even though CBC’s dedicated grounds, custodial and maintenance staff are up early during snowy or icy conditions deicing the sidewalks and roadways, it is still advised that folks take extra care driving and walking around the campus. Please wear appropriate footwear to help you avoid a slippery fall.

Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead

Did you get a chance to view the different Day of the Dead displays that were showcased throughout the CBC campus? If you did and know what it is about, I hope you enjoyed the displays and look for them again next year. If you did see them but don’t know their meaning continue reading this blog for more information and maybe next year you can appreciate them a little more.

What is Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead?
Day of the Dead is a ritual that started over 3,000 years ago in Mexico. It used to be celebrated for an entire month in the 9th month of the Aztec calendar, which translates to the beginning of August. When the Spaniards arrived to Mexico and saw the natives celebrating this ritual they thought it barbaric and tried to eliminate it. The Spaniards couldn’t understand why they were embracing death rather than being afraid of it. The Aztec natives believed that death was a continuation of life rather than the end of life.
The Spaniards did their best to end the ritual when they tried to convert the Aztecs to Catholicism, but it just wouldn’t die. The missionaries prohibited traditional ritual events, but the importance was so great they had to make a compromise. So in their attempt to make the ritual more Christian they moved the date to coincide with church observed All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day (November 1st & 2nd), which is when it is celebrated today. And so the two cultures merged.

Symbolism
Day of the Dead is still celebrated in many parts of Mexico, mostly in areas with high indigenous populations and in the United States as a more public event. The ritual has a lot of symbolism and it is meant to celebrate that life continues after death. Día de los Muertos is celebrated with an offering to family members or friends that have passed away. The offering is set up as an altar, which contains different items depending on the region. The altar can display pictures, favorite foods or items, and other personal objects of the deceased. They also have skulls made of sugar or chocolate with the names of the people that have passed away, candles, and pan de muertos, which is bread unique to the event. In some regions, people spend the day at the cemetery decorating the grave site, eating favorite foods of the deceased, and honoring their spirits. Many believe that in doing this, the soul is attracted back to them on earth.

Ebrary - Now Available for Download!

Over 25,000 ebooks are now available for 'check out' through our ebrary database. While before you had to have an internet-connected computer to read them, now you will be able to download part or all of an ebook to your computer or compatible ereader for your offline reading pleasure.

Any device capable of displaying a PDF file will be able to display a selection of up to 60 pages of an ebook.
Computers and other devices able to run Adobe Digital Editions may check out entire ebooks.

You can find CBC Library Databases at http://columbiabasin.edu/library/resources or
From the Library Home Page, Click "All Resources”.
Click on one of the databases such as EBSCOhost, CQ Researcher, etc.
If you are off-campus, log in with the library password. There are three ways to get the password as a currently registered CBC student:

1. Find the current password in the “CBC Library Research” open course in Angel as shown in the following image.

If you don't see "Library Research", it could be hidden. Hover over to the right and click on the "Course settings" button, then check it to unhide it.

Once inside the "CBC Library Research" class, you should see the Password in the Course Announcements Section. If it is not shown, click "All" to view.

2. If you still can’t log-in to Angel, send an email to library@columbiabasin.edu with the subject line “Password Request” and provide your name and CBC student ID # in your email.

Quick Links
On the toolbar, there are quick links to the Kiosk, CBC Class Schedule, Angel, student email, library password, laptop availability, and more. There are quick links to library databases to find books and articles.

Search Box
You can also use the search box to search one of twenty resources directly. Click on the little drop down arrow to see the list. Now suppose I want to find out if the library has "The Lord of the Rings" books. I type in the title. If I don't choose from the list, the default will do a web search using Microsoft's Bing. If I select "CBC Library Catalog" from the drop-down menu, it shows me the catalog search results. It looks like we do have the books and you can come and check them out. Suppose you want to read the best seller 1105 YAKIMA STREET. I'll search the catalog again and find that we don't have it. So I am going to search "Worldcat.org", which is a union catalog of lots of libraries. I found out that I can borrow from Mid-Columbia or the Richland Public Library. These two libraries issue free library cards for current CBC students and faculty no matter where they live. I can also search EBSCO to find some book reviews or any article that mentions the book. Amazon.com is also a good place to browse some user reviews. I can also go to Google books to see if there is a preview of the book available and read the first few pages. There are also links to Oxford English Dictionary and Encyclopedia Britannica.

The ones marked with a asterisk such as CQ Researcher and Oxford Reference Online are licensed for CBC use only, so if you are off campus, you need to put in the quarterly library User Name and Password in order to search. The password is posted in the “Library Research” open class in Angle. Click on the quick link "What's the library password" for more information.

Tools
Click on the drop down arrow next to the "CBC Library" blue button to see links like "Contact", "Clear Search History", and "Toolbar Options".

New Resources On Campus

Subject: New resources available to current students

Welcome back!

Since the Tech Fee Open Computer Lab is gone, I wanted to let you know of some new resources available to current students. We have added to the Tech Fee funded student laptop checkout program in the library and we now have 100 laptops available. The Library has increased the checkout time from three days to one week. A big thank you to the library staff that have worked so hard at providing this service.

We are also adding some wireless printing stations around the campus. There will be 7 on the Pasco Campus and 1 on the Richland campus. Students can log in with their laptops and then send documents to the NetPrint website and specify which printer they want their document sent to.

There will be a minimal cost for this printing, but students will start out each quarter with a $12.00 credit. Black and white printing is two-sided and will cost $.03 each side. Color prints will be one-sided and cost $.25 per sheet. For more information go to www.columbiabasin.edu/NetPrint

This workshop is predominantly for counselors and math faculty, but open to anyone who wants to learn how to help students who experience math anxiety.

3:30-4:30 p.m. (L-102) - Meeting the Needs of Women, Minorities, and Diverse Learners; Matching In-Class Examinations to Students’ Learning Preferences
Without positing that women, minorities and non-traditional learners have either different learning needs or learning styles, this session will provide an opportunity for faculty to explore a wider range of content, style, “setting” and grading practices of in-class examinations.

7:00 - 8:00 PM (Theatre) - Workshop with Sheila Tobias
Participants will view and discuss Tobias' film "Math Anxiety: We Beat it and So Can You" which documents the successes of her Math Anxiety Clinic. This session is open to the public with a special invitation to teachers and would-be teachers.

More Computers in the Collaborative Study Rooms

Our Collaborative Study Rooms have become very popular since we opened them two years ago. This summer, we added 10 more computers to a total of 18 in the two rooms in response to the W building computer labs' closure due to budget cuts. We made sure that the layout is still conducive to collaborations. We hope the two rooms will become even more popular with more computers, of which four have dual monitors, 3 new scanners, and new software. Below is a list of new software installed in addition to MS Office and OpenOffice:

1. Visual Studio(Computer Programming) on all 18 computers;
2. Converge(Math) on 9 computers;
3. Creative Suite (Photoshop etc. for Graphics & photo) on 3 computers;
4. Quickbooks Pro (Accounting) on 5 computers;
5. Derive (Math)on all computers (work in process).

Survey Q & A - Hours

Q: Why isn't the Pasco library open more hours/days?

A: In Fall 2009 we reduced our hours in response to the previous round of budget cuts. The hours selected were based on months of library usage surveys; we are again counting the numbers of users when we are open on Saturdays to determine whether 11 AM - 4 PM is the best match. We hope to be able to maintain our total number of open hours in the face of forthcoming cuts.

Survey Q & A - Quiet v.s. Group Areas

Question:
Can you keep people quiet in the main computer area?

Answer:
(Background) Providing both quiet and collaborative study areas for our students is an important goal of our library. This balancing act has been challenging due to our limited space. We are glad to see from the result of our online survey that overall the "Space for quiet study" was rated 4.53 (the 3rd highest rated resource) and "Space for collaborative study" was rated 4.49 (the 4th highest rated resource) on a 5 point scale.

We attribute the high ratings to our Library Zones system that has been in place for two years. The main computer area is in the Green Zone where normal talking and collaborations are allowed. The Epicenter computer lab is in the Yellow Zone where students can walk in and use computers quietly. We keep the Epicenter open whenever there isn't a class in there. Another option is to use a laptop in our Red Silent Zone in the back. If you need to avoid other distractions, you may request a study room for individual study, although you will be asked to give up the room if a group needs it.

Survey Q & A - Outlets for Laptops

Question:
Where can I plug in my laptop?

Answer:
We took a look around the building, moved around tables in the collaborative study room, added one surge protector strip outside of the epicenter, and another one in the Law Library area. All the surge protectors and the regular outlets should accommodate at least 36 laptops.

Look for signs on the walls where there is a outlet.

Survey Q & A - Printing

Q: Why doesn't the Pasco library provide free printing like the other labs?

A: The other labs support printing with the student technology fee. Also, unlike the other labs, the library is open to students and faculty from other schools as well as members of the public. With our current technological and staff resources it isn't possible for us to sort free CBC student from paid non-student printing, even if we did receive tech fee funds to support it.

Survey Q & A - Computers

We received a number of questions and comments on the library survey (May 16 - 22 2011); this is the first in a series of responses.

Q: Why don't you add more computers?

A: In December 2010 Information Services and the student technology fee allowed us to begin checking out 61 laptops to students for use within the library and beyond. Last month (May 2011) we checked them out to students a total of 371 times!

While the library's budget does not provide for additional computers, Information Services continues to evaluate student needs and explore options for expanding computer access in the future. Students should be aware of our computer access policy and let us know if they cannot find a computer for their primary purpose: CBC classwork and other academic needs. We can often find a computer for you in the Epicenter, and (as some of you pointed out) there are usually students using our computers for non-academic purposes who the librarians can ask to vacate the lab.

Update (12/7/2011): We now have 150 laptops that check out for 1 week (7 days) at a time. All of the open computing and collaborative study room computers were replaced during the past quarter and 10 units were added.

Library Survey 2011 Results

We would like to thank everyone who took our library survey between May 16 and May 22. While we are still compiling the results of the paper surveys, we'd like to share with you the initial results of the online version. View Slides.

We are very happy to see that the highest rating goes to our "Quality of customer service" and "Quality of research help" in Question #4. We are also honored to read the 142 positive comments on "The Library's greatest strength". At the same time, we received 88 questions and comments on "Areas for future improvement".

Audiobooks Online

The library has added our first collection of audiobooks, an ‘academic’ subscription collection from Recorded Books with several hundred titles. They are available now to Search in OneClickDigital. To be able to ‘check out’ books you will have to create a free account, either on campus or after logging in with our quarterly password.

You will then be able to download titles to your computer and/or Mp3 player.

When, why, & how did we start the library zones program?
We started the zones during fall of 2009.

Reason #1: Our annual library survey results consistently show a strong need for both quiet & collaborative areas in the library.

Reason #2: College of Dupage Library implemented their Zones program and it has worked out well for them. We are grateful that they shared their experiences with us.

Reason #3: We hope that having clearly defined zones in the library provides a favorable environment for collaborative learning as well as a quiet space for individual study.

How did we create the zones?
Major Task #1: During the summer of 2009, we rearranged desks to have big tables in the green zone and the yellow zones and small individual desks in the red zone.

Major Task #2: We transformed the two rooms on the east side of the main computer area into open use Collaborative Study Rooms. The two rooms used to be for quiet study only, but they were not used by students very much at all. Several computers were moved into the area, two white boards were installed, and two big conference size tables were set up.

Major Task #3: Signs were posted throughout different zones.

Zone Expansions
1. Winter quarter 2010, we expanded the green zone to include the outside of epicenter.
2. Winter quarter 2011, we started to keep the Epicenter open whenever there isn't a class in session to serve as a quiet zone for computer use.

Visitor Parking

Community members and other visitors to CBC may park in any of the white striped parking spots on campus. Yellow and green striped parking spots are reserved for those with CBC parking permits. Those assigned to the visitor parking lot in front of the A building should have a visitor permit.

The main CBC Library is in the L building in the center of the Pasco campus; there is no immediately adjacent parking. The library entrance is on the South side of the building. The East A, G, P, West H and North H parking lots are all quite convenient.

The CBC Library is featuring a National Poetry Month display of books of poetry, about poetry and poets, and recordings of poets reading their work. We've included books of poetry from Katrina Roberts who will be here tomorrow, April 7th at 7 PM (HUB Main Stage), along with works from LitFest poets who came in previous years. We are also featuring ebooks of/about poetry in our catalog; you'll need the 'Library Research' password for the quarter to read them off campus.

We would also like to invite poetry fans to share one of their favorite lines of poetry with us, either here in the library or on our Facebook page.

National Poetry Month is a program of the Academy of American Poets, which offers 30 Ways to Celebrate, as well as many poems and information about poetry on their website.

Women’s History Display Contest Result

They are Gloria Steinem, Coco Chanel, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Maya Angelou.

4 out of the 7 entries that we received had identified all four women correctly, but one entry didn't have contact information and was disqualified. The winner was drawn from the 3 correct entries and Christopher Mich is the winner. Chris received a jacket donated by the CBC Bookstore. Congratulations!

Database Trial - Sharpe Online Reference

We currently have a trial running of Sharpe Online Reference. These are highly praised scholarly reference titles available online as a onetime purchase. The majority of the titles currently available are useful for U.S. History. Titles that are potentially useful for other history courses include:

· Conflicts Since World War II

The title Social Issues in America covers the sort of topics that are of interest in Philosophy and Sociology, as well as for issue-oriented composition research papers.

DUI meeting

EBSCOhost Interface Updates

EBSCO has announced several updates for its EBSCOhost interface. The most significant is the PDF navigation sidebar, which allows users to browse a PDF full text publication without having to close the viewer; they've included a video demonstration in the release info. They have also added a text-to-speech function for their HTML full text articles, with your choice of American, British or Australian accents!
A minor but helpful change is the addition of the word 'Cite' to the previously mysterious golden page button that generates article citations in MLA, APA, and four other styles.

Qwidgets Everywhere!

We have deployed the Qwidget version of our "Ask a Librarian" service in our reference webpage, our Topic of the Week blog, the Library Research sections of WebCT and Angel, and on the results page of every EBSCOhost search. These use OCLC's QuestionPoint software to provide you live 24/7 web-based text chat with librarians from Washington state and beyond. Qwidgets are great for quick questions, but the full window versions, either frames or no frames, would be better for more involved research help.

Of course, we still hope that you will come in to our libraries and let our reference librarians assist you, live and in person. But if you're at home struggling with your research paper late at night when the library is closed, isn't it nice to know you can still Ask A Librarian?

Expanded Green Zone

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

During last fall quarter, we noticed that students are really great about following the rules for the library zones, especially in the red Silent Zone. Thank you! :) The green Collaborative Zone was very popular too and we realized that we need more tables in the Green Zone where you can talk normally and collaborate with others. That became one of our projects for the winter break and we really like the new look and we hope you do too!

The reference collection was weeded and some volumes were moved to Archives;
The reference shelves in the middle of the library were shifted to the west;
Four large tables were added to the Green Zone outside of the Epicenter;
“Reserve Ref shelf”: All reserve reference books (those books that your professors pulled for specific classes and have different loan periods) are on a standalone “Reserve Ref shelf” behind the reference desk and the new books shelf now.
“Oversized shelf”: All oversized books (art books, etc.) are on the “Oversized shelf” at the end of the main collection now.

Fitness Center Winter Break Hours

The last day to workout in the Fitness Center for credit is Saturday, December 5th. However, our administration worked hard to extend the availability of the Fitness Center to currently registered students, staff, and faculty. The extended time is;

Printing in the Library (Pasco Campus)

Students will NOT be charged for citation, abstract, library catalog, or KIOSK printing.

Students will be charged for printing of full-text articles, email, assignments, web pages, etc. in the main library on the Pasco campus.

G624 and G699 are black & white printers ($.05 per page)

G530 is the color printer ($.25 per page)

The black & white printers are defaulted to "Print on Both Sides" (Double-sided) to save paper and students' cost.

The color printer is defaulted not to "Print on Both Sides" (Single-sided)

You can pick up your printings at the Circulation Desk. Let us know the number of the computer (e.g. Index 8, epicenter 16, etc.) that you printed from.

Tech-fee supported "free" course-related printing services for students are available in the W-building open computer lab on the Pasco campus and in the Medical Library on the Richland campus.

To print PowerPoint slides 2-6 slides on one side of a page, print as "Handouts".

The library has posted the policy used for proctored exams, slightly revised at the 11/10/09 Library Committee meeting. It includes links to the other departments offering proctoring on campus: the Assessment Center, the Resource Center Disability Services, ~~and the~~ ~~Open Computer Lab~~. Gale Contemporary Literary Criticism - Cancelled

At the end of September 2009 our subscription to the Gale Literary Database Contemporary Literary Criticism expired. This was not renewed as it was one of our lowest use databases. Students and faculty still have access to the full Gale Literature Resource Center through the Richland Public Library, although they will need a library card from them. Further, literary criticism will continue to be available in journals in EBSCOhost and ProQuest.

The library retains numerous print volumes of the Gale literary reference series Contemporary Literary Criticism, Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and more. You can use the Gale Literary Index to determine which volumes have the title/author you are seeking and check our catalog to see which ones we own.

MLA Style Guide Updated

Our MLA guide page for CBC Library Databases has been updated to reflect the 7th edition MLA Handbook (2009). For those required to use the 6th edition style we have retained the old page. If you compare them you will notice a number of important differences:

All citations include the medium of publication.
- Print publication citations end with the word 'Print.'
- Online publication citations end with 'Web.' followed by the date of access.
Citations no longer include the name of the library that subscribes to the database.
When citing online publications the URL should be included "only when the reader probably cannot locate the source without it or when your instructor requires it" (MLA 7th, 5.6).

The citation generation features of our databases vary greatly in the quality and style of MLA citations they are producing. Some have not adopted MLA 7th edition at all, others have made odd changes. We recommend that you follow the guidance of your instructor, the Writing Center, the MLA Handbook and this guide page (in that order), and use automatic citation generators with caution.

Collaborative Study Area

The library has created a new collaborative study space in the rooms near the open computer area. Each of the two connected rooms feature a large conference area adjacent to a whiteboard. We have also moved six computers into the first room, each with enough space for groups to work together on presentations or other projects.

This effort has been taken in response to comments on our surveys. This was the only way that we could produce something like more group study rooms. The reconfiguration of our existing furniture allowed us to move all of the group study tables out of the quiet study area, which we hope results in more quiet.

There are two side benefits we hope you will enjoy. First, the collaborative study room always seemed very dimly lit before, but the white-topped tables reflect the light creating a much more appealing space. Second, moving the computers allowed us to leave more space between several of the computers in the open lab - enough for notebooks or even textbooks!

Unlike our other group study rooms we currently have no plans to sign groups up for this space - it is first come, first served. We hope that you will come in and take a look, and let us know what you think.

Guidelines - Damaged Materials

It has always been the policy of CBC Library to charge patrons who damage library materials checked out to them. This is necessarily a subjective procedure, as 'damage' ranges from a few dog-eared pages to near-total destruction. We have recently settled on guidelines to help us insure consistency.

Minor Damage — This includes a few pencil marks, bent pages, and very slight water damage.
Note in student’s account. Verbal notification to the student the damage was noted on her/ his record.

Moderate Damage — This includes highlighting, ink marks, stains, water damage, torn pages or multiple pages with pencil mark.
$5.00 fee.

Major Damage — This includes damage to book’s cover and binding requiring extensive repairs.
$10.00 fee

Severe Damage — This includes torn, cut or missing pages, severe water damage, excessive ink marks, burns, teeth marks from animals, or any other extensive damage.
$15.00 processing fee, plus full replacement cost as determined by a Librarian.

Any damage to CDs, video tapes, or DVDs
$15.00 processing fee and full replacement cost.

New York Times - Sunday Print Edition

Due to budget constraints and low use the library will not be renewing our subscription to the Sunday New York Times; July 12th will be our last issue. Note that for a variety of reasons we have not had a subscription to the daily print edition.

The text of articles from the New York Times (Late Edition, East Coast)
may be read via ProQuest, apparently sooner than the issues hit newstands in New York. Content is also available from their ad-supported site, http://www.nytimes.com.

ProQuest also offers full color PDFs for articles from the New York Times Book Review and the New York Times Magazine, which came with our Sunday edition and will also no longer be available in print at the CBC Library.

Oxford Art Online - Cancelled

Spokesman Review Drops Us

We have been informed that the Spokesman Review will discontinue our subscription as of July 15, 2009; they no longer provide mail delivery. The full text of the articles are available on ProQuest, although it appears to take several days to get loaded into the database. Seattle Times - Subscription Dropped

The library has decided not to renew our subscription to the Seattle Times, which we started getting when the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ceased publication in March 2009. The Seattle Times full text was removed from ProQuest in January 2009 and indexing only runs to October 1, 2008. Free, searchable full text is available at the Times ad-supported website. We will receive our last print issue June 30th 2009 and retain the June issues until the end of July.

Tuition and Book Loans

Peggy Buchmiller, Director of the Resource Center announced that the Center "has tuition and book loans for Summer Quarter available for students who qualify. We will begin accepting Summer tuition loan applications on Monday, June 1st. Summer book loan applications will be accepted beginning Wednesday, June 24th after book buy back is completed. Applications are available in the Resource Center Office in the HUB."

She also explained that there is no interest and no fee and no low income requirement, but students will have to show financial ability to pay back the loan by the end of the quarter. This would be helpful for some students who are working but could benefit from paying the tuition in three installments over the summer. Students who have financial aid already should not apply for the loan unless for some reason their aid payment did not arrive on time and they need help.

HIV/AIDS Certification

Information regarding the 7 hour/4 hour "HIV/AIDS Education for Health Care Providers" DVD videos and the test available at the CBC Library.

For test takers:

There is no charge to take the test at the CBC Library.
Once you’ve completed the test, the Library sends it to the CBC Health Science Department in Richland.
The Health Science Department has between 3-20 days to grade your test and get your results to you.
To pass, you must earn a minimum of 75% correct on the test. If you pass, a certificate will be mailed to you using the address you provide on the back of the test.
If you do not pass, you have the opportunity to retake the test.

For Library Staff:

The HIV 25 page handout is now available for students to print (and pay for) or email to themselves on computer Ref 01 at the Pasco campus and MEDLIB01 in Richland. We’re no longer providing these optional, resource-intensive handouts for free. Examples of the handout (for students to refer to and decide if they want to print/ email it) are stored in the back of the HIV binder.
In addition, new, single-page handouts are available to give to students when they have questions (or first sign up to take the test); the handout addresses FAQ’s, tells them what to expect when they’re taking the test, and provides Library hours, phone numbers, and test result information.
Very clear staff instructions are located at the front of the binder in attempt to make it as easy as possible for staff members to help students sign up/ take the test.
Staff members will always collect the test when student is finished for the day or leaves the library, even on a break. Students are required to have picture ID to sign up or request an incomplete test. For privacy purposes, staff should write the information down on the sign-in sheet—not the student him/ herself. The information logged includes student’s full name (directly from ID), job title the student is working toward, number of hours required for that job title (a list of job titles/ video hours are included in the binder), and the date.

In one week, 236 pounds of food was collected and donated to Tri-City Second Harvest food bank.
And $493 in overdue charges were waived from student’s library accounts.

The Christian Science Monitor announced in October that it is changing format, effective April 2009. Articles will continue to be published daily online, but the print edition will be issued weekly instead of daily.

The CBC Library received our last daily print edition on March 27th (available at Circulation) and has just received the first weekly print edition, dated April 12 2009, available on our Magazine browsing racks.

EBSCOhost appears to have ceased coverage as of 3/27/09. ProQuest continues to offer full text, but coverage is incomplete and it is not known if the weekly will be included.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer - ceased publication

Tuesday 3/17/2009 is the last print issue of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. It is not clear at this point whether the new digital-only PI will continue to be included in ProQuest.

Beginning Wednesday 3/18/2009 the library will instead receive the daily Seattle Times in print. This is a direct substitution from the vendor; the library will evaluate this when the subscription comes due. The Seattle Times is no longer indexed by ProQuest and all full text was removed.

ProQuest Content Update

The State Library has provided the latest ProQuest content update. There are 8 publications which have ceased and 6 name changes. They have lost full text rights for 10 publications, including Hispanic (we retain coverage in EBSCOhost) and New York.

66 new titles include Religious Studies and the Journal of Latin American Studies, both from Cambridge UP with 1 year full text delay.

New Database - ArchiveGrid

As part of our OCLC FirstSearch subscription (for no additional cost): ArchiveGrid "is an important destination for searching through historical documents, personal papers, and family histories held in archives around the world." An index to nearly a million collection descriptions from thousands of museums, historical societies, libraries and other archives. Researchers identifying potentially useful items may contact the holding institution to determine how/whether they can gain access.

New Database - ProQuest eLibrary

Part of our Washington State Library ProQuest database package, eLibrary includes "more than 2,500 full-text magazines, newspapers, books, and [TV and radio] transcripts..." The database is further broadened with multimedia content. Another unique feature is the ability to limit or sort results by reading level. ProQuest Search Options for locating Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles

ProQuest includes two search options that would seem useful in limiting to peer-reviewed journal articles, but unfortunately remove many relevant articles.

The first is 'Document Feature - References.' This is a relatively new feature and many older articles do not include it. At some point in the future it may become useful, as ProQuest is undertaking a project to revise older holdings.

The second is 'document type.' ProQuest databases refer to the same type of article in a variety of ways, and since we search multiple databases at once it is difficult to form a comprehensive search that addresses all of the ways in which peer-reviewed journal articles are 'typed' across them.

At this point it is advised to use the 'Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed' limiter only.
