Visitor Parking - Library Building, Pasco

Community members and other visitors to CBC may park in any of the white striped parking spots on campus. Yellow and green striped parking spots are reserved for those with CBC parking permits. Those assigned to the visitor parking lot in front of the A building should have a visitor permit.

The main CBC Library is in the L building in the center of the Pasco campus; there is no immediately adjacent parking. The library entrance is on the South side of the building. The East A, G, P, West H and North H parking lots are all quite convenient (view on this map). Get directions.

Finding Required Textbooks for Classes

After you have registered for your classes, you might want to find out what books are needed. Instructors send the information to the CBC bookstore before the quarter starts. You can search for the textbooks at the CBC bookstore website. You may rent if available. Renting can be cheaper but you have to mail it back after the rental period. You may also use the library reserve copy if available, which is also usually in-library use only. See detailed information about your options below.

I. Steps to find out required textbooks by course
1. Go to http://www.cbcbookstore.com/
2. Scroll down and click on the blue "textbooks" button above "Store Info"
3. Check the checkbox and click "Continue to Textbook Ordering" (You don’t have to order online.)
4. Click on the quarter that you want to find out about. (e.g. "Winter 2013")
5. Select the department. e.g. "ENGL&", click on it to select the specific class
6. Classes will appear on the right side window that says "Your Schedule".
7. Click on the black "Find Books" button
8. You should see the list of textbooks, note the edition and ISBN.

II. If the book is too expensive,  you can rent textbooks if available.
Go to http://cbc.rentsbooks.com
You can search for the book by ISBN, Title, etc. Note that not all textbooks are available for renting. Renting can be cheaper but you have to mail it back after the rental period. Amazon.com sometimes also offer rental options.

III. At the library, we have a course reserves (library use only) which includes some textbooks. We don't have textbooks for all classes on reserve. You should also try searching by the book's title in the catalog to see if there is another copy in a different location. Ask for "Reserve Circ" items at the Circulation desk. Ask a librarian if you need help with the search.

IV. Resource center provides short-time no-interest book loans for students. According to their director, “there is no interest and no fee and no low income requirement, but students will have to show financial ability to pay back the loan by the end of the quarter. This would be helpful for some students who are working but could benefit from paying the tuition in three installments over the summer. Students who have financial aid already should not apply for the loan unless for some reason their aid payment did not arrive on time and they need help."

V. Finally, you may want to confirm with your instructor that the book you are ordering is the right one. Sometimes your instructors might even allow you to use an older edition, which could be much cheaper. Some instructors might also put an extra copy of the textbook on reserve at the library if they know that the bookstore has run out of copies. Arbor Day Display

The Library is having an Arbor Day Display showcasing books about trees and wildflowers. You can take a look at the online list of books on display.

CBC has been designated as a Tree Campus USA and will celebrate Arbor Day on April 11 with a tree planting ceremony. Details can be found on the News Release about this event.

CBC Inclement Weather & Travel Information

College Closure or Delay – It’s that time of year again where any given morning we could wake up to winter weather conditions. Although it’s rare, if you suspect that CBC may be closed, please check one of these resources:

• All local radio stations
• CBC website at http://www.columbiabasin.edu/
• CBC telephone 547-0511. If the campus is closed or delayed, the message will state that CBC is closed or delayed. If there is no message about a closure or delay, the college is open as usual.
• Flash Alert at http://www.flashalertnewswire.net/
• KVEW Television, KEPR Television, and KNDU Television and website http://www.kndu.com/

Information will only be posted or announced if CBC should close. Employees are expected to use reasonable judgment regarding traveling to work in inclement weather/adverse road conditions. If your cell phone and/or personal email account have been subscribed to the CBC Emergency Notification System, you will receive an alert through this system should the college close. Winter College Travel
Programs and departments are especially encouraged to be aware of winter road conditions and evaluate the need for large group travel, especially with students (i.e. class field trips, ASB club activities, etc). Unless absolutely necessary, it is recommended that large group travel with students be rescheduled to take place during the late spring, summer and early fall months, rather than during winter weather months

Walk, Don’t Run
Even though CBC’s dedicated grounds, custodial and maintenance staff are up early during snowy or icy conditions deicing the sidewalks and roadways, it is still advised that folks take extra care driving and walking around the campus. Please wear appropriate footwear to help you avoid a slippery fall.

New Resources On Campus

Welcome back!

Since the Tech Fee Open Computer Lab is gone, I wanted to let you know of some new resources available to current students. We have added to the Tech Fee funded student laptop checkout program in the library and we now have 100 laptops available. The Library has increased the checkout time from three days to one week. A big thank you to the library staff that have worked so hard at providing this service.

We are also adding some wireless printing stations around the campus. There will be 7 on the Pasco Campus and 1 on the Richland campus. Students can log in with their laptops and then send documents to the NetPrint website and specify which printer they want their document sent to.

There will be a minimal cost for this printing, but students will start out each quarter with a $12.00 credit. Black and white printing is two-sided and will cost $.03 each side. Color prints will be one-sided and cost $.25 per sheet. For more information go to www.columbiabasin.edu/NetPrint

Fitness Center Winter Break Hours

The last day to workout in the Fitness Center for credit is Saturday, December 5th. However, our administration worked hard to extend the availability of the Fitness Center to currently registered students, staff, and faculty. The extended time is;

Tuition and Book Loans

Peggy Buchmiller, Director of the Resource Center announced that the Center "has tuition and book loans for Summer Quarter available for students who qualify. We will begin accepting Summer tuition loan applications on Monday, June 1st. Summer book loan applications will be accepted beginning Wednesday, June 24th after book buy back is completed. WebCT IDs

The student's WebCT ID will (mostly) be in the format firstname.mi.lastname, e.g. john.q.public, as detailed in the WebCT Login Info page

• The ID must be entered in all lowercase. Any capitalization will cause the logon to fail
  
• If the student has more than one middle name, there will be additional middle initials, e.g. george.h.w.bush
  
• If there is already a student with the same WebCT ID, ".2" is added to their ID, e.g. john.smith.2
  
• If a name has a suffix, such as JR, SR, I, II, III or IV (not absolutely sure about the last one), those will be discarded and not used. so PUBLIC JOHN Q SR and PUBLIC JOHN Q JR will result in the same ID, and if they are both enrolled, one will have ".2" as a suffix
  
• A problem mainly with last names separated by spaces - it takes the first 'word' as the last name:. So VAN DAMME JEAN CLAUDE would become damme.j.c.van - VAN, the second 'word' as the first name: DAMME and any additional 'words' as middle names or initials.

Note regarding textbooks: The library only has the textbooks if the instructor or department places them on reserve with us. If instructors have (or can get) an extra copy of their textbook they may bring them to Circulation, or send them via campus mail along with the class reserve form to Library Circulation, MS-L3.

Some textbooks are available for students to use in the Tutor Center.

Learning Needs Assessments

The Resource Center provides “Learning Needs Assessments” to students who are struggling academically. These assessments will look at the reasons behind the students academic difficulties and refer them to appropriate on and off campus resources. Please refer students to the Resource Center in the HUB to schedule an appointment for this assessment. They can schedule this appointment by calling the Resource Center at 542-4412.
