Proctored Exams

The library has posted the policy used for proctored exams, slightly revised at the 11/10/09 Library Committee meeting. It includes links to the other departments offering proctoring on campus: the Assessment Center, the Resource Center Disability Services, and the Open Computer Lab. (Updated Feb. 7 2011 y.y.)

In addition to CBC, those seeking proctoring services may wish to contact the Mid-Columbia Libraries' Kennewick (Main) and Pasco branches, Charter College, Sylvan Learning Center, and WSU-Tri-Cities.

Jobs: Library student worker

We'll have openings for student workers in the Library starting Winter 2010. If you are interested, pick up an application form at the student employment office and submit the completed application to the Library Circulation supervisor.

Applications are accepted from Nov. 5, 2009 to Nov. 19, 2009. Training will begin over Christmas break.

Gale Contemporary Literary Criticism - Cancelled

At the end of September 2009 our subscription to the Gale Literary Database Contemporary Literary Criticism expired. This was not renewed as it was one of our lowest use databases. Students and faculty still have access to the full Gale Literature Resource Center through the Richland Public Library, although they will need a library card from them. Further, literary criticism will continue to be available in journals in EBSCOhost and ProQuest.

The library retains numerous print volumes of the Gale literary reference series Contemporary Literary Criticism, Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and more. You can use the Gale Literary Index to determine which volumes have the title/author you are seeking and check our catalog to see which ones we own.

In support of the right to choose books freely for ourselves, the American Library Association and CBC Library are sponsoring Banned Books Week, now through October 3rd, an annual celebration of our right to access books without censorship. This year's observance commemorates the most basic freedom in a democratic society—the freedom to read freely—and encourages us not to take this freedom for granted. Since its inception in 1982, Banned Books Week has reminded us that while not every book is intended for every reader, each of us has the right to decide for ourselves what to read, listen to or view. CBC Library and thousands of libraries and bookstores across the country will celebrate the freedom to read by participating in special events, exhibits, and read-outs that showcase books that have been banned or threatened. Please come by and check out the display today! Now, more than ever, celebrate the freedom to read @ your library! Read an old favorite or a new banned book this week.

MLA Style Guide Updated

Our MLA guide page for CBC Library Databases has been updated to reflect the 7th edition MLA Handbook (2009). For those required to use the 6th edition style we have retained the old page. If you compare them you will notice a number of important differences:

• All citations include the medium of publication.
  • Print publication citations end with the word 'Print.'
  • Online publication citations end with 'Web.' followed by the date of access.
  
  
• Citations no longer include the name of the library that subscribes to the database.
  
• When citing online publications the URL should be included "only when the reader probably cannot locate the source without it or when your instructor requires it" (MLA 7th, 5.6).
  

The citation generation features of our databases vary greatly in the quality and style of MLA citations they are producing. Some have not adopted MLA 7th edition at all, others have made odd changes. We recommend that you follow the guidance of your instructor, the Writing Center, the MLA Handbook and this guide page (in that order), and use automatic citation generators with caution.

As part of a campus-wide effort to maintain needed services with a reduced operating budget, the CBC Library has adjusted our evening and Saturday hours for the 2009-2010 academic year. Our Pasco campus hours for Fall quarter are:
